So I thought I would give a recommendation once in a while for some reading into health, longevity, nutrition, exercise, or other areas I think my patients might be interested in.
As my patients know I am very interested in living many years as actively as possible. I turned 60 this year and am determined to not go gracelessly into senility or old age. Some luck might be involved.
But..leaving the luck that I cannot control to the God(s) I am realizing that more effort is needed to stay even with life every decade..and to reverse the aging process is certainly a conscious choice we make daily, and requires a bit of the warrior spirit..or at least some definite discipline as we travel this road.
We all pretty much know the basics..good thought, good exercise, healthy diet, strong emotional ties with a caring family or with friends, enough sleep, and ways to minimize stress. I recommend animals be part of every person’s life.
If anyone is interested in my personal effort:
I bought the Vitamix high-speed blender this last year. It is a bit pricey, but I cannot sing its praises enough. I have had several “juicers” which wasted the fiber and were a mess to work with. With this machine I blend all of those wonderful plants up (almost) daily, and drink many things easily that i would not get around to steaming or making into a salad. Beets, Kale, Carrots, Spirulina, Licorice root, Parsley, Ginger root, Bananas, Spinach, and many other foods all get thrown into the blender and my morning meal is there, with the mid-morning snack safely in its thermos.
I make fresh kefir…this is much better than what I have found I could buy and is fun to produce. I have directions in my blog on another post. Good for all things probiotic.
I swim two and a half miles in the morning. To do this I must get up at an unlikely hour. This is my thing..and I do not ask my patients to do this type of aggressive exercise plan.
The early morning swims have defeated a pattern of not sleeping soundly. With this much exercise early in the morning I sleep like a baby again. Sleep is time for rest and repair..this is more important than we often think about.
So, any patients who come to see me will probably get some gently nudging in these directions. I hope I can be of help.
